this is the stuff that this one uses!
computers / digital devices
desktop computer (442810)
this computer is an amalgamation of the past decade of collection of parts and pieces, upgraded in 2024 (at the cost of like more than a months wages) to be a bit ridicolous, honestly it’s a big black box with a bunch of io in the front and a cd drive!
main specs:
- ryzen 7 9800x3d (8 cores, hyperthreading support)
- 64gb ddr5 ram (2x32gb)
- nvidia rtx 3060 (12gb)
- 2tb samsung nvme
- endeavouros (gnome)
and a couple hdds that may or may not still be connected inside :P
laptop (eternalia)
this is a 2-in-1 thinkpad yoga x1 gen 2 convertible from 2017 and it’s not exactly fast (stars praise the intel u-series 4-7th gen /s) but it’s more than acceptable for a typing, writing/drawing- and 720p youtube machine.
main specs:
- intel i7-7500U (dual-core, hyperthreading support)
- 16gb lpddr4 ram (soldered)
- 1tb nvme SSD
- a really pretty screen thats also a wacom tablet
- endeavouros (gnome)
the cpu is honestly a joke and struggles to play a youtube video over 720p with more than three tabs open. pretty unfortunate, it’s a nice laptop. the battery life also …leaves things to be desired (despite being replaced like in 2025) (4hrs of typing use (in obsidian </3) and throttled cpu). brightness control without hacky display filters is impossible on linux due to the 1st-gen oled screen, which is mildly frustrating. the screen isn’t super bright but pulls a ton of power when in use. but for a typing and carry-it-along computer it works.
for a while i considered a chuwi minibook x (zvava influence) but haven’t bit the bullet. mostly due to financial constraints :P it’s a fun laptop!
smartphone (pallidrose)
its a zfold5. the case should be more decorated :c they dont make enough cute cases for these phones
main specs:
- snapdragon 8 gen 2
- 12gb lpddr5 (soldered)
- 1tb internal storage
- two really pretty screens
- mostly stock android
after my iphone 12 mini became nigh unusable due to constant overheating when charging, crashing springboard off a fresh boot and randomly killing my music app when it was not in the foreground, i got this phone!!
idk lets see how long it lasts :3 this one was bought used for an extremely reasonable price with no obvious issues soooo
at some point ill probs write a rant about companies not making freaking small phones anymore </3 this one is thankfully extremely narrow on the cover screen so I can still type with one hand unlike on my friends’ phones…
little server (gravebox)
look i havent found a better name :c this is one of those thinkcenter thin-clients that i bought off ebay in 2024. it’s, uh, better than my old desktop cpu :P
main specs:
- intel i5-6400T (4 cores, no hyperthreading)
- 32gb sodimm ddr4 ram (2x16gb) (god ram was so cheap)
- 128gb m.2 ssd (os)
- 2tb sata ssd (cdn)
- debian stable (no de)
this is a cute machine! its a run-of-the-mill 24/7 host-all-ones-services type thing :3 runs a bunch of internal apps (parts of this site!) and sometimes minecraft server(s)
cheap proxy (n/a)
a little proxy that i rent as is tradition from racknerd and pay like 13€/y for <3 it’s basically the gateway for my internally hosted services.
- uhh 1 vcpu core
- 768mb ram
- 15gb ssd (“fast”)
- some centos thingy (no de)
software
this kind of turned into a listing/tierlist of all the software i’ve ever used whoops
de/wms
gnome!!!
its a really good de. quite controversial in some spaces, and that’s fair- it’s a very opinionated little thing. i do have grievances with the way that the extensions are handled and i find some design choices.. questionable.
but if one can live with that… gnome is, in my opinion, one of the best DEs one can use. it’s snappy, it looks nice, it works well and has a sensible layout. it’s the only DE that this one has ever managed to get stuff done on and actually stick to.
kde
very cute! not my thing at all :c
budgie
budgie is a very unknown DE that looks a bit similar to cinnamon-kde. it’s definitely worth a try if one is looking for something a bit different <3
i3/sway
extremely fancy tiling window manager; used this for a while on eternalia while still in the gymnasium. energy-efficient and highly configurable! definitely something worth trying if into this kind of stuff
os-es
endeavouros
to this one, THE definitive arch distro and possibly THE definitive linux distro. it can be treated as “just a fancy archinstall script” (even though it does more) and it stays out of ones way. benefits of arch with less hassle. amaze amaze amazeeee
arch linux
cute! used vanilla for a while. bit annoying to maintain and install. but paradoxically the most stable and usable one.
the aur is the selling point of arch linux. it’s the, to me, breaking point on using anything other than arch. sure, one can package arch in a container, but it’ll never work as well as baremetal. at least for me.
fedora silverblue
SO fun! atomic systems are extremely cute to work with, but I don’t posess the patience nor the resilience to set up openxr, wivrn and monado on a readonly fedora system. worth a shot for stable dev setups thoo, since most work after all is supposed to be done in non-atomic containers (see: distrobox!)
fedora
probably the runner-up after endeavour to this one, tight integration with gnome, nice package manager, frequent updates :3. it’s a great choice if one can live with not having the AUR outside a box.
ubuntu
not really… :c
ok fine. ubuntu is a somewhat frustrating distro. mainly because of snap. it’s not an implicitly bad distro, there are few distros I would actively label bad, but its obsession with its snap package manager unfortunately breaks any and all good-will I can give it. look, having opinionated defaults is one thing, (and stars know that I as a gnome user cannot really complain about opinionated defaults!) but literally forcing a snap install when one uses the aptitude package manager is just, well, to describe it as invasive would probably be close. it’s really bweh.
debian (stable)
great for servers and thingies one is likely to use containers in! but then the argument of an atomic system may present itself better.
less great for desktop use. the default package repositories are years out of date at any given point.
gentoo
fun for playing around with, wayyy too much waiting around in actual use for me. it took 40h to compile rust on my old laptop and i didnt even want rust </3
linux mint
debian with the annoying edges sanded off. a, in this ones opinion, very good choice! don’t personally use it anymore due to the to-the-gnome-user unfamiliar DE layout in cinnamon.
pop!os
it’s definitely a unique distro (praise)! it works shockingly well and the drivers come configured nicely, usually.
edubuntu
a very unique ubuntu distro focused on education that was seemingly abandoned for a long time. this was my first ever operating system / interaction with a computer, funnily enough. i didn’t have root access (yet) and despite it being like 2014 i only have good memories of this little distro. it’s been picked back up, afaik, but I don’t know how the new one is. looks fancy. iirc the old one ran on the unity DE? it was a good linux distro <3
nyarch
/j
idk it might be good? leave a comment :3
